In commemoration of King Kamehameha... The
women riders wear pa'u or long skirts of 12 yards of satin
tied in place to cover their clothes, following a tradition
that began after Kamehameha the Great received a gift of
horses, and faded out with the arrival of cars in the early
1900s. Each woman is accompanied by a lead page, two
attendants and three escorts.
